Some companies sell a dash skin for the early cars, perhaps yours too. I have read mixed reviews of these skins. Most folks prefer all new dash pads but you say this may not be an option.

I bought one last year from Eckler's for my 1980. It's not a cap it fits the complete dash. I also bought a can of matching dye and it looks great. The P/N is 30132 $99.99 I hope this helps

but this does snap on on top of the and in front of the old busted up dash, right? How easy was the install, and can you tell it's been covered up or not ?
I had one of those full caps on my 82 when I bought it. Whoever did the install didn't do a very good job so some of the openings weren't right. Plus mine was installed with double sitck tape which pulled it out from the original. I don't know if this is the proper way or not to install one of these, but mine squeaked and rattled like crazy.
I found a 81 that was wrecked, bought the whole dash from them for about $200.00, cleaned and painted it and installed it in one afternoon.
Bseery: I'm using the dash pad on my 79. My dash had few small cracks and I thought I'd give the cover a chance before buying a brand new dash. It turned out great, and with the fraction of the cost of a new dash. It comes with a small bag of silicone to clue it on the old dash, but take my word for it you'll need more of it to make it fit like a clove.
I have the dashpad too and I HATE it. IT's too thick, the **** bezels don't fit properly, the glove box hangs, the speaker grills are not removable, the gauge clusters are a PITA to install, in fact there was so much strain on it my main cluster lens BROKE (damn hard to get a new one here, more money down the drain) and I installed it using all the glue, and about 20 C-clamps (outside of car)
Figuring the cost of the pad and + new lens that I now need + all the headaches a new dash is a better deal.
Mine aligned well with everything. Like you I used about 20 C clamps to hold it in place while the clue was drying. Too bad it didn't work out for you. ;)
