According to the Corvette Black Book,
Now this doesn't verify that 77 compressors were used in late 76 models, but the possibility is there. Then again, it is pretty easy to adapt a short type compressor to use in place of the short one. Although, the cost and reliability of the short compressor has never been close to older long compressor. So it probably doesn't make sense, economically.
Some late-production 1976 Corvettes were built with parts normally associated with 1977 models, especially interior components.

Thank you everyone. I was under the impression that when I saw a 76 at a car show if it has the short comp it was not stock but it looks like the late 76s could have it. I saw a 76 with the 77 side view mirrors and that was not stock for the 76 model year.
