I changed the ATF in my 76 with a slipping turbo350. When pouring the fluid into a holding bottle form the plastic catch thing i used i noticed a large number of gold colored flakes in it, they were very small but there and kind of looked like gold glitter. Im hoping someone would eb able ot tell me what is slipping by this, im thinking front splines, and maybe a temorary quick fix to the problem.
While I'm not a fan of "snake oil" products, I was recently recommended to try the Lucas Trans Fix product in my 91 Eclipse daily/winter driver. The auto trans had been rebuilt a few years ago and has been giving me fits again lately, slipping, not going into gear, all kinds of "funky" shifts, etc, etc. I figured this stuff is not going to work but as the guy was so insistant of it's worth, I figured what to heck for $8 I'd give it a try. That and I'd really like the car to last until at least the spring.
Drained off about a quart of fluid and put this stuff in. It's consistancy is like cold molassas and getting it into the trans took awhile. However I'll have to say that ever since, the trans is like a whole new animal. It shifts pretty nice, no more slipping, goes right into gear, etc. Don't know how long this improvement will last, but for now actually I'm pretty amazed.
I'd say give it a try. The bottle claims no solvents, does not void warranties, and unless the clutches/bands are completely worn out, it should help. Based upon my experience I'd say you have nothing to lose except $8 and perhaps alot to gain.
put a bottle in with the tranny change, took it for a quick drive and it seemed to help, but was improvong over time. Yopu think its thick then, try it at 40 degress  i really had to go to the bathroom but couldnt put down the funnel for near 30 min :D
well i should of said that ta the beggining :banghead:
id still ike to know what is slipping.
hopefully the lucas stuff will hold up untill i can get a 4 speed
I guess I didn't mention but when I put it in my car, it was about 32-33 degrees out! I had wired a funnel into place, poured enough in to fill the funnel, then went inside with the bottle to warm me, and the bottle up. Went back out in 10 minutes, filled the funnel again, etc, etc for about 45-60 minutes until completed. Yep, that's some THICK stuff!
I even went out and bought another bottle and put it in my wifes car figuring "it couldn't hurt". At 65K miles, that trans too has done a couple funny things so I hope this stuff helps prevent what I have gone through with the Eclipse.
As a side note, I really like these older Mitsubishi products but their auto transmissions are terrible. The weakest link of the car for sure.
Good Luck with your tranny. Hope the Lucas "Snake Oil" keeps you going for awhile! :yesnod:
