My car has the backup lights on all the time. I am trying to figure out what triggers the lights. Does anyone know what may cause the lights to stay on the entire time? Even when in first gear and such.
I believe by the shifter linkage on the left side of the tranny is a proximity switch which when in reverse connects the circuit and lights up the reverse lights when in N,1,2,3,4 the circuit is open (no ground) and thus the lights are off. Anyone else???

Re: Question about backup lights?? (Cali,68,L-79)
Your back up switch is mounted on the drivers side of the tranny. The linkage may be out of whack or may not be working at all. You will have to get under the car to see it. Have someone stand at the back of the car and work the linkage at the tranny and you can see if it works. Here is a pic of what yours should look like.

Re: Question about backup lights?? (Eddie 70)
The small rod goes to the reverse shift lever. It is held on by small clips that may have fell off and are not working the switch any more. If the small rod is still there you can, bubba style, tie it in place with the stiff wire out of a bread tie.
I took a look at it and everything seems to be working right, but I can jiggle the switch and make it work properly shutting off in other gears. So I think my switch might be on the way out. Thanks for the help people.
