He just basicly sticks in your existing key and drops in the little brass tumblers to match each key. So you can have your locks matched to your ignition key as originally intended.

I recently had my El Camino door locks replaced with new ones and he keyed them to match another vehicle I own to eliminate my carrying an extra door key around. Jim
Had no keys on my 68, and its hard as hell to get 68 cylinders in the US let alone in the UK!! My answer was to use the keys and tumblers from a new set of mid 70's vette cylinders and install these in the original 68 cylinders. Its a little tricky as you have to carefully remove the 6 tumblers from the new locks whilst keeping the order correct, but it all fits ok into the originals. Make sure you have your eyes peeled and a clear bench or all hell will brake loose - Beware the tumblers are spring loaded!!!! Worked for me. Keys were slightly tight to start off with but now work perfectly.

Default 69 Corvette Door Keys

The modern square key blanks do not work in the 69 Vette door lock. The original key has the side slot that is about 1/8 inch longer than the new key blanks for 69. The locksmith here in Santa Maria CA discovered why the key would not work after I removed the lock assembly. You either have to find an original key blank with the long slot or cut the slot further back in the key blank. After he lengthened the slot the key would open the door. Some type of safety device used on the Corvette lock assembly.

I had this problem on my 73. Had to find an original B&S key blank.

Maybe this will help someone somewear . Its very, very old school. When I was 16 ( I am 72 ) I drove a 48 Plymouth to HS. I started having problems that the ignition key would not turn to on. My Grandparents happened to be visting my parents. (1966). Granpa just happened to be a mechanic at a Dodge dealership in past times. He came up with a can of lighter fluid. He squirted some in the keyhole and the key
(after key was removed ) ran the key in and out about 10 times, never another problem. I KNOW, that wasnt a corvette but hope this passing of old info will help someone sometime. Keep up the wave.
