I've got the rear apart in my '69 big block car. Have experienced some significant wheel hop previously. Do these bars work and exactly where do they mount?
I believe they mount trasversly along the length of the rear spring. I'm a little surprised to hear about the wheel hop. I've never really dogged a C3 hard enough to check myself (afraid of breaking things), but I'd always kind of thought that the IRS by design minimized wheel hop.
I got one of those bars on my 68 BB.
Bolts to the aft carrier spring attachment and welds to the crossbar forward of it.
Makes the aft end very rigit.
Well, I don't regularily race my car, just on very unique occasions.
Thanks for the information Gunther. This is helpful as I was concerned about ground clearance. Also the wheel hop was violent enough than I discovered a broken half-shaft u-joint this morning. It broke right at the grease hole.
Larry... I use to experience severe wheel hop with my car. I race with street tires so traction is marginal. The severity of wheel hop varied with track conditions and was worse on a cold track. One time it was so bad my trim rings rotated on the rims and cliped the air valves on both sides as they exited the rims. I had two flat tires by the time I got back to the pits. I tried every thing to get rid of the wheel hop including all new bushings but nothing worked untill I put on a VBP traction bar. That was a couple of years ago. I have not experienced the problem since then.
Did you notice a traction increase also or did it just eliminate tire hop?
It is hard to say. I expect the traction was better because the tire stayed planted but I always had to lift the throttle durring wheel hop. My 60' times improved but I dont know how much of that was traction.
Thanks ZL1POWR I thought you might say that. Its pretty tough to try and make a judgment on something like that. My goal is a 12.00 on a real radial tire.
