A friend of mine just bought a70 Lt-1 coupe that has significant windshield frame and cowl rust. Anybody have any hints and tips on removing the nose of the car? He is figuring on re-using the nose when the cowl/windshield frame replacment is done. Thanks in advance.
i just recently finished removing the nose on my 79. As for tips, a LOT of the bolts wont come off and i suggest going to your local hardware store and getting a cutoff wheel for your drill. We had to cut off about 4-6 bolts. Also get some brake parts cleaner to help loosen the bolts. And while your removing the nose i suggest you buy some POR-15 and coat all the brackets and supports in POR-15. If you dont have a good tool set i HIGHLY recomend getting a 167 piece craftsman mechanics tool set. It made the work a LOT easier. good luck and dont rush things.
First of all, of course, unbolt all the stuff that is hanging on the front clip (including the radiator shroud), after that take a chisel and start chiseling. I like to start at the door jambs on the lower part, chiseling up CAREFULLY. Use sharp chisels and putty knifes. Then chisel up to the angle in the body line. After that, start on the top and chisel down. Do not try to pull the clip off when you have not chiseled it loose completely, it will break and you will be spending a lot of time fixing it. A little patience and some effort and it's perfectly possible to get it off in 1 piece.
I removed mine with the inner fenders still in the car, I chiseled those loose too. You can remove it as 1 big section though.
Maybe this pic will give an idea of where to chisel:
Do not forget to remove the screws that are just in front the door behind the rocker side moldings
