To recap, I have the C** A** cassette unit in my 1967 that is less than satisfactory at 25W x 4. The rear speakers in particular needed more power. I flirted with the idea of a two-channel amp for the back but decided to go with a more powerful head unit: a Pioneer 50W x 4 DEH-P3500 with CD and remote. I will re-install the vertical/original AM/FM radio for the sake of looks but leave it disconnected/cold. I have on order some face components to spruce it up. So where to put the Pioneer?
I bought a repro glove box liner off EBay for $14 to play with. And I have. Here is a mock-up with an old Pioneer cassette player installed. We are getting into Bubba territory here so watch out. The unit is longer than the glove box so the back had to be cut. I wanted some air under the head so I cut wood "feet" from a broomstick. There are four feet. The front two are bolted down with the head framing unit into the glove box with...flathead furniture joint connector bolts (Allen head). The back two feet simply support the head and keep it level. The furniture bolts are flat enough to allow the head unit to slip into the unit frame without mechanical interference. I left enough room on the right for 6-8 CD storage.
All this when installed is of course hidden behind the glove box door; out of sight. The one potential fly in the ointment is the projection of the head unit about 1" beyond the end of the glove box. My car is in storage and I cannot recall if there might be some interference back there with some framework or other. If there is I will try something else.
Though I cant help you figure out where to put it I can say that you have chosen a nice stereo. I have used pioneers in all my cars for a long time now (well... not that long, I'm only 23) and in my opinion they are the best. Right now I have the DEH-P7500MP in my daily driver and its great.
I have some advice though, don't get lazy about taking the faceplate out of the car with you. I did and thats why I now have a newer model (and a new pass. side window :mad ).
I have always been impressed by Pioneer. I chose that unit because it has the power, rotary dials and lacks the television screen graphics that are irrelevant to me. And I know what you are saying about theft. That is why it will be located behind the glove box door, out of sight of evil eyes and minds.
Yes. And the remote control is line-of-sight which I imagine means infra-red. So it will not penetrate the door. But that is fine with me. I am looking into the possibility of a hard-wired remote to tuck into the glove box when not in use. But at this point I will live with opening the door to do adjustments.
Is this a done deal? What about your storage compartments behind the seats? Don't mid-years have those? If you have one behind the pass. seat, it may be easier to get to it while driving.
It's not a done deal as I have only spent $15.00 to explore the glove box option. And certainly the storage area behind the seats is a possibility. But the cover for that area is one-piece and very ackward to lift unfortunately. It's much simpler to open the glove box door.
Paul, good idea. I've been mulling over where to put my head unit in my '79. I looked into the remote option and found that there is a "repeater" device for relaying the IR signal. You locate the receiver eye in a convenient location. This eye is wired to a transmitter eye that you mount onto or near your faceplate.
