I started to refresh my brake calipers last week after noticing a small leak of brake fluid from the front right caliper, and things don't look pretty in there. The piston sleeves (and to a lesser extent the pistons) are showing black pitting all over the place. I should have known enough to quit right there, but I had new seals already, and figured I'd go through the exercise and see how it went, as I won't be driving until spring.
Well, no suprises, when I bled the newly sealed calipers after putting them back on the car, the passenger side is now better, but the driver's side leaks. I need new calipers! The generic rebuilt ones at my parts place locally are $80.00 each. I notice VBP has a sale on stainless steel sleeved ones right now for a little less than that before shipping, which is where I'm leaning right now. Those wilwood ones look nice, but I can't justify the $$$ right now.
Does anyone have recommendations for non-stock '68 calipers that might be better/cooler(looking)/lighter/better performing, but still in the $300-$350 range for a full car set? I could go higher if they pleased me enough. What is the ballpark for aluminum? Pictures too, if ya have 'em.
Yeah, I figured I was probably dreaming o get an upgade from stock for anything other than big $$$. I'll go with the VBP stainless/o-ring units and not look back. Fastcorvette.com is talking about some forthcoming TITANIUM calipers...infinitely cool, but can't even imagine the price :nonod:
