i have been talking to grand sport, van steel and others but none of you are giving me the anwser im looking for. let me explain-- i have never repaced the u joints on the left side yet however there are flat spots at the ends of the tube 180 from each other. i dont ever remeber them being there untill i blew out the right side u joint and was inspecting it. when i got my right side shaft back with new u-joints i noticed the flat spots during installing, i also saw that the right side shaft also has smaller flat spots on it also, but there not as big the same way 180 from each other. i have been told that these spots may have been from a vice installing new u joints, but like i said ive never done the left side, thou i am the 2nd owner and dont know if he did. so back to the question, does this sound like a twisting half shafts or are these just vice marks? thanks all of you. :grouphug:
Re: what does a twisted half shaft look like (gravismaximus)
Twisted is just what the name implies. It's just the shear point where it twists in half.
I would venture to say that yours are just dents. The half shafts are pretty tough.
I had one break years ago at a drag strip. But i really think that it wasn't just power and slicks that broke it. I blame the problem on old bad U-joints that were probably binding causing a much greater rotational load and weak rear spring that allowed the rear to have way too much squat during power brake launches with a 3800 stall converter.
Re: what does a twisted half shaft look like (gkull)
Gkull is quite right about the twisting of the half shafts , in addition it would take a rather substantialy modified 81 engine or some bad driving habits to start causing you problems . You can also spray paint a stripe along the length of the half shaft after installation to give you a visual aid to spot this twisting problem.
