Default Two "What's missing"-questions

There are two things in my enginebay that I can't figure out what they do, or was supposed to do more correctly.
It is a 72 that originally had AC but not any longer, another thing that is removed and might have a matter to this question is the wiperdoor that sadly is no more.

First:

Shouldn't it be an expansion tank there? Right now there's just two metallic pipes that leads nowhere. And what should be on the metallic holder?
If it's washer fluid I know why the holder is empty :)

Second:

What are these cables for? Two easy possibilities is that it's something to control the AC-compressor or to control the wiperdoor.

I don't know how much that's really original in this enginebay but one of my winter-projects is to clean it up and take away all that has no function.
For example, almost everything with the AC was removed when I bought it, but the AC-radiator was still sitting there in it's place without any hoses connected

Thankful for any answers!

No, it's not for the wiper door. The wiring in your(or who ever's)hand is A/C related stuff. Looks like they made a little jumper wire there. I believe this had to be done so the blower motor will work. On an A/C car, the left thumbwheel on your temp control has to be moved or switched off of the "OFF", position. Once this is done, power is then fed to your "Off, Low, Med, High" switch going to the blower motor. On a non-A/C car, this is directly from the fuse box via a brown wire to the speed switch. The wire with the black and green wire(side by side spade connectors)hooked directly onto the compressor, if I'm not mistaken.

I have a base 350 '72 and it did not have any sort of expansion tank, I don't believe all were suppose to have them. The metal hoses around that area were probably to the AC compressor.

:iagree: Metal hoses ran to the compressor. I think the wiring may also be to the compressor or to the blower motor. Not 100% sure since I don't have A/C :leaving:

Thanks for your informative posts guys!

Then I'll just have to keep the setup of wiring as it is but shorten off all cables and isolate them better.
I'll see what to do with me metal pipes, anyone knows if there is some kind of pressure in them? Probably best to leave them as they are for now :)

If anyone has detailed pics of a 72s enginebay, please tell me, it would be very helpful to see how it "should" be :)

The metal piece on your fenderwell looks like half of the bracket used to attach the two heater hoses to the fenderwell. The bracket was one piece, with a flexible joint in the middle that would allow the outer half to break off if you bent it enough times. That is where the bracket is located on a 69, although the piece in your picture looks a little different.

One of those metal pipes goes to the hose for the ac condensor (radiator) and the other one goes to the condensor (inside the dash unit) there should be another hose to complete the circuit. Joe

Once again, thanks for your answers.

I decided to never try to build back the AC in the car so right now the only thing I want to do is to remove as much of the equipment as possible to get a cleaner look.
These metalhoses, does anyone have any idea if it's possible to cut them off or unscrew them in there abutment and leave the ends open with no negative consequence? I mean, there is no compressor left so there should be no pressure or circulation any more?
I think the ends are plugged right now. I'll go have a look later today.

The flat plug and black ground wire are for the compressor. The other plug and wires probably went to a refrigerant pressure switch. You don't have to worry about any pressue on those hoses with the compressor removed, but if they are not hacked up you might want to save them in storage in case you ever want to re-install A/C.

I'll add another question here, look at the green arrow in this picture:

It shows where one of the metal hoses enters, well something, don't know what the black thing does but I wonder if it's possible to remove the metal hose without destroying anything?
If I could separate the hose from its abutment without destroying it I would get rid of the metallic hoses completely.

Regarding the wiring, I couldn't find any voltage on them independet of how the fan was running or any other settings. I took away the jumper too but nothing happened.
I'll just cut of all cables and isolate them good and try to hide them somehow, I don't want to spoil all possibilities to rebuild the A/C but today I have no such plans.

Would be very greatful if anyone knew anything about the metallic hoses abutment!

Inside that black box like thing is an A/C evaporator core where the refrigerant would evaporate and make the air cold. Now to open the black thing and take out that core is a job and a half - many days work. But from the condition of those parts it looks like you'll be in there some day to replace all the seals and gaskets. Be careful here as the ventilation flows through there and keeps the hot engine compartment air out of the people compartment. Also that evaporator core may be hard to replace or you may be able to sell it to someone else that needs one. My guess is all freon is long gone and only some oil my trickle out the end. Just seal up the ends - even corks will do - and clean it up with metal polish until your ready to replace all the seals and gasket in the ventilation/heater box. :seeya

I took some pics of my '72 base 350 and am trying to email them to you. I have dialup and may have overloaded it, if it crashes, I will send them 2 at a time.

As for removing entire system see this thread. http://forums.corvetteforum.com/zerothread?id=726663

Looks like under the hood of my 77

Can you buy that hood anywhere? Or is it a modified one? I really like it.

Thanks for your explanation, I'll stay away from doing that this winter I believe
It looked simple from the drawings I had, "just" to open the box and take the evaporator out, but now I know better!

There's still the possibility to cut off the hoses just where they enters the black box but that would spoil all possibilities to rebuild the A/C, atleast without byuing a lot of stuff so I think I'll go with the polishing!

72GACRZR: I checked my e-mail now and hadn't recieved any pictures, when did you send them? Have you got my correct adress: christian.larsson@home.se ?

Quinn_Seipp: I'm not sure from who the hood is, it was added before the car was imported to Sweden, before 1986 that is. But recently I got a tip about this company: http://www.acivette.com/
They sell all the things that my car has been styled with, wing, front etc. The hood must be one of theirs but someone must have added the centerscoop later because I have seen no hood with a center scoop for sale.

I've tried to e-mail them but get an automatic answer saying that they "don't accept spam" :mad
Come on, I'm one of their customers, why can't they accept my mails?
Maybe they don't like my foregein e-mailadress, if anyone in the US manages to mail them, please tell me!

Anyway, thanks for all your help guys!

Some of that wiring could be for your TCS system thats supposed to be on your carb. Especially if you HAD A/C! Might also be some wiring for the idle control solenoid (also on the carb), and again especially if you had A/C.
Fender well stuff could also be for the wiper washer fluid. I think your car may have had a bag for the fluid, but I'm not 100% certain.
