Default Wiring question.

Ok, i am totally re-doing my wires on my car. Setting up my car to push button start in the process. I have after market gauges, ive removed the a/c, and ive removed the windshield wiper system. Now, im looking at a mess of wires, ive removed the steering column so that i can work with these wires better. What wires do i need to leave alone so the car will run? I know the ignition wire, but im switching that to a push button with a hidden switch, therefor removed the key system. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

p.s. Its a 79

Have you heard of Pandora"s box? The way I look at it, you have two options. Remove everything, forgetting about trying to save what you need, and rewiring the whole car. But remember that other things are wired with these harness such as brake and other lights. Or you can leave the entire harrness intact, and just add the wiring that you need to install your push button and gages. I suggest the latter.

headlights and taillights are being re-wired as well. Reverse lights, brake lights, and such. My wires are a mess, the person i bought the car from took bits and pieces of wire to put together my wiring harness. I have acouple shorts anyways, so i was just gonna take it all on and re-wire it all. I just need a good wiring diagram and some info as requested.

personally i dont think a wiring diagram will helpme. Im looking at once length of wire about 2ft long that is made up of 5 different pieces of wire taped together. A wiring diagram is gonna base everything off colors, which i know not.

:banghead: What are you hoping to accomplish by doing this? It seems as though you may have bitten off more than you can chew if you need to ask a question like this.

Well the question was geared to any hidden relays and such. Like the kill switch that wont allow the car to crank while not in park. Just stuff like that. I dont think ive bitten off more than i can chew, ive worked on boat wires, newer car wires, and so forth. Im setting up a boat breaker fuse set up and just need to move everything to it. Instead of having a harness i will have individual connectors, giving me the ability to trouble shoot easier. And the fact that the wire mess under my dash is disgusting, and the fact that the fuse box is near impossible to get to without flipping upside down.

 Well I don't know wires make a '79 run but I would get one of this blown-up laminated wire diagrams. Plenty good after market wireharnesses. MHO I would buy new and then modify for my needs and the install.
Anyways you need power to coil + (pos) and starter solenoid S term to start and run. Bet a '79 has plenty of interlocks for trans, theft, smog.
