Default Project 69 Rotted Windshield Frame update

Well if you read the last post, my windshield frame was rotted out at the top (about 9" where the T-Top trim overlaps). I removed the windshield last night and the bottom frame area is OK, just a small hole the size of a pea in the lower pass corner (easy fix). I have a replacement frame from a 69 on the way. I plan on treating the whole birdcage with por-15 and painting with correct zinc paint. While I'm doing all this I want to coat as best I can the inside of the birdcage with Por-15. Any ideas on the best type sprayer for this??? I'm thinking I need something that gives more of a mist then heavy spray???? Thanks for any input.

I actually carefully cut the fiberglass where is overlaps the birdcage where the hinges bolt to it and carefully refinished this area and put the fiberglass back with brass screws. It is not noticeable but I know it is taken care of.

I know guys that have used a common garden sprayer for POR-15.

I have a 69 with the same problem as your's, possibly worse. I have not started on it yet, it will probably be this summer. I am very interested on how you project goes, and what the major problems are. If you keep pictures or a notebook, I would really like to get a copy. Thanks, Tom Hargrove

Tom
Keep in touch, I plan to document the whole process with picture and measurements (first time for this type of repair for me). I will be replacing the frame from about 2” above the VIN tag. The rest I will wire wheel, fill and repaint. If all goes well it will look brand new when I’m done. The car as it sets is bare except for the complete fiberglass shell and birdcage. So, I have easy access to the whole birdcage area. I WILL break the code on treating the entire inside with POR-15 and as much of the outside as I can without breaking any fiberglass seams. As I look at it now, there are access holes both forward (dash area) and AFT (back window area) to snake some type of spraying device in there. More to follow.

I used a PreVal sprayer from home depot. It sprayed pretty well once it was thinned with por-15 solvent. I have a nearly a quart of solvent left. I'm in Jax also, so if you want whats left of the solvent let me know.

I got up inside the hinge pillars pretty well (up to the bottom WS frame corner
with a foam brush.

How much of the WS frame are you replacing.
It sounds like you may get away with simply replacing a section of the top
header rail.

I had what I though was a small hole at the bottom corner. Well, when I went
to fill it with thye MIG on low power, I eneded up burning a much larger hole.
My point: since you are there already ... take your time and fix it all. Poke
away with a small screwdriver as much as you can.

Good luck .. I'll be watching the progress.

Dave
You are out of control and way out of my class. :D If I has 1/10 of the metal working skill you have I would look at this as walk in the park. Once I get it all cleaned up and stripped of paint I will post some pictures so you can tell me what direction to head in. :)

Out of control - maybe ... but moving way too slow. Progress measured in years.
I WILL be driving again this Spring.

Do a search .. C3 section ... archives ... my username ... search for windshield.
This should pull up a few posts that I made during the surgery. Some had
pictures, but some no longer do. Huh. I have the pics .. so if you need any
guidance or ideas, I can send you a 1000 words at a time (what a picture's worth).

I have a '79 and am wondering what I need to remove to simply inspect my winshield posts for rust. I don't suspect a problem but would like to verify.

Thanks

"I have a '79 and am wondering what I need to remove to simply inspect my winshield posts for rust"

Start by takeing the kick panels off and using a flashlight and mirror look up inside the post. Then remove the pillar post and header to see if there is any rust there. The windshield would have to come out for any more than that.
Good luck
