I have been having trouble starting my 79. First It went dead on my wife not far from home one night. It went to get her and about an hour later it finally started. Same again another day. I replaced the ignition module. Still having problem occasionally. I can change the ignition module and it will usually start after that. I am only putting the original and the new ones back in. Does anyone think it may just be an old worn out distributor cap and rotor cap?
 :banghead:
Thanks. I know my wife had a bad pickup coil on an old thunderbird she had (last ford she ever had since she met me), but a friend of mine who is a real mechanic repaired it and I really don't know that much about distributors. But I think I can replace it now that I see the pic. :hurray:
one test is to wiggle the wires while running, a good indication is if it dies if
yiu put vac. to adv. add it dies it can be bad and not die from these tests to
comp, If you don't mind, could you post a removal procedure. All the people I have asked at work say the distributor must come out. My chiltons doesn't go that far indepth. And I'd sure like to do it without pulling it.
never had to pull one to change pick-up, you do have a HEI right? :skep:
if i needs to come out; bring it around to TDC #1 firing postion, timing mark on
harmonic damper on the time pointer, mark the possion of the rotor, loosen
the dist. clamp nut clamp should slide back so dist can be pulled.
at the begining remove the electical wire's going to the cap and make plug
wire's if your not sure about possition
:nono: You MUST pull the dis. and drive the roll pin out of the dis. gear to remove the dis. shaft.
You may get the old one out without doing this by cuting it in half but how are you going to get the new one past the advance flange?
Mark it, pull it, fix it, replace it. 1\2 hr.
