I've always used the top of the line Devilbiss guns. But recently I switched to a cheaper Devilbiss, the finishline 3 hvlp and I really like it. They retail at about $125.00, half what I used to pay.
Thanks - I've never used a HVLP gun, can you comment on the difference between it and a syphin gun? Also, do you prefer a gravity feed cup or the one with the cup mounted below the gun?
The hvlp transfers more paint to the surface instead of throwing it into the air. I had problems with my first hvlp (a Croix from when they first came out) in that I couldn't get a surface without orange peel. The new gun doesn't seem to have that problem. If you are used to a regular gun, it's scary how close the gun has to be held to the panel. I prefer the suction still but that's because I've used it for so many years. If I was starting out I'd definately go with the gravity feed as you can use up every bit of paint. It also will not spit and sputter like a siphon gun when it gets low on paint. Just don't clear the nozzle by holding your finger over the air cap! They make bags for the gravity feeds that I'm going to try. I think that will make clean up better and you may be able to hold the gun nearly upside down. That would help under the car.
I guess it really comes down to personal preference though.
The painter's on this forum may cuss me for this but I bought the Chicago pneumatic HVLP gravity fed gun from Harbor freight for $40. That is what I painted and primed my whole car with and it turned out great. I am sure that from a professionals stand point there is a difference but for what I acheived I am very happy with and for what I saved I went back and got the matching detail gun and still had cash left over.
I shopped for one a few years back. Go to sears and check out their craftsman line. They have a nice pro model for around $100 that has all the bells and whistles of the $1,000 brand name guns. While you are there take a look at their compressors, water traps, filters, etc...when I want tools my first stop is at sears.
HF also has the Devilbiss Finish Line HVLP gun ... just over $100.
I have a cheap suctio n gun now ... looking to pick up a Finish Line in the future.
