Original bolts didnt really require much torque. There probably isn`t a number for it. You just tighten it up until it contacts the shoulder and back it off until you get to the first place you can put the cotter key through the castle nut.
My 74 shop manual says 70FTLB. My Assembly & Installation Manual says 60 to 80. The AIM also says that the bolts must be torqued with the spring compressed to curb height or within .5" of the main leaf being flat. What I did was tighten the bolts to 50 to hold the spring in place, attached the bolts at the ends, then torqued them all to 70.
Also, my AIM also shows 5 different bolt sizes for the spring ends...depending on the strength of the spring...you should be choosing a bolt size that will provide the proper bumper height. If you are installing your old spring then I figure the old bolt size would be fine, but if you are installing a new or different spring, then be sure to check the ride height and adjust accordingly.
I do recommend an AIM for anyone working on their Vette. It covers just about everything except for the internals of the drive train.
I did install a steel replacement, but my car is a tad high with the stock bolts. I figure the car will settle after a short break in, but time will have to tell on that. The spring has the wieght of the car but the main spring is not nearly flat, will that make a difference? or should i just check now and then on the bolt torqe? thanks again for the help it is nice to have the been there done that help!
Jeremy, what supplier did you get your rear spring from? What is the measurement from the ground to the center bottom edge of the rear wheel well. I got my spring from Ecklers and the spring is 3 1/2 inches too high with the stock bolts. I had to change to the 8" bolts but I want to stay with the 6" if possible. I am trying to find someone that has a new spring in an 80-82 with stock 6" bolts and rear height at 28" or less.
