Hi,
Since the Dern Search Engine and Database seems to be lost in Cyberspace...I need to ask....how big a job is it to replace the fuel tank in a `74 vette? This car has the small flowmasters and I cant decide if they`re in the way or if the tank can be coaxed out without removing them?
All the input would be Greatly Appreciated!!! :chevy
74 is easy, I just helped a friend of mine on his since I did my '75 a couple of weeks ago. Here's the condensed version:
Drop the mufflers.
Remove spare tire tub (all of it).
Remove the rubber lines, etc. from the tank.
Remove bolts hold tank straps.
Remove tank support.
Tank is out.
Don't be afraid to drop the mufflers, it will be easier to remove and get the tank back without them in the way.......
Ken has it right on. I just did one in a 69' big block car and it wasn't that bad. I suggest getting a couple of lengths of fuel line and replacing then while your there, it's easier and you don't want to trust 20+ year old rubber lines. I also say drop the mufflers, it will make the job easier.
You can clamp off the rubber fuel feed line with vice grips. Remove the rubber fuel line from the metal fuel line side and drain the gass by removing the vice grips. Remove gas cap for faster flow.

One more question...If I loosen the muffler hangars...is that enough to move em aside?????
Not on my '75 nor on the '74. By time you try to wiggle them out of the way you could have had them off the pipe.
BTW: I left out REMOVING ALL THE GAS. Assumed everyone would know to do that. - NEVER ASSUME...... On a '74 it will all come out in your face when you disconnect the lines if you don't. On the '75 everything is on top so you don't have to drain every last drop. On the '74 I used a siphon from the fill neck to remove most, then cut the rubber line that connects to the fuel pump feed steel line and drained the rest into a bucket. The more you get out the better before you try to muscle the tank out. Gas weighs about 8lbs/gal. Why struggle with a shifting weight?
This is unfortunate.....my Mufflers are solidly welded along the entire length...not sure what to do in this case?I dont want to have to unbolt manifolds at the engine!
My car is still at the paint shop when it developed this problem and I wont see it for a few more weeks...So I can ponder this issue somemore
Dropped mine twice, first time took me ½ a day because bolts and exhaust were rusted. Second time to upgrade fuel pump took 45 min. Not a bad project, just wear eye protection there’s a lot of stuff that gets knocked loose.
Did mine, entire exhaust system was removed so it was a cinch. Wear glasses! Lot's of crap under dere, plus I didn't drain my tank completely so I had fuel all over myself.

Re: FUel Tank Replacement (12stepvette)
Use eye protection, ear plugs and a surgeon's mask. That crap gets everywhere when you drop the tank. I was pulling junk out of my hair for 2-3 showers.
