A high-quality timing light is much more than a flashlight. Buy a good one and it will serve you well for many years.

I like the new light from Equus but haven't bought or tried one yet. For $100 at Pep-Boys it has a built in tach with dial back timing for setting advance curves by changing springs and weights. Also has xenon bulb. I don't know how accurate it is but a built in tach will make timing chores much much easier.
Now for power there is a hot positive post on my '74 drivers-side fender and easy to find as a bunch of red wires connect to it. Any engine metal ground will do for the negative.
Let us know if you use this one. Happy hunting. cardo0
