Default Brake thoughts

I have been having brake trouble. Air getting into the lines without a leak I can Identify anywhere.

and my car is backfiring.

Could this be some sort of leak in the brake booster?

The brake booster is not connected to the master cylinder, sure there is linkage passing from one to the other but as for air no.
You can easily pump air into the system with excess bearings clearnace or excess rotor run out. Lip seals are designed for a maximum of .010 runout total of bearing play and rotor wobble, exceed this and the system takes on air.

I am planning on borrowing my fathers dial indicator and magnetic base, how does one check the bearing clearences, I can check the rotor runout fairly convienently.

You don't normally check bearing clearance on the front, the back definitely but on the front you have a bearing tightening procedure. This is only guessing and someone will have to set it straight, I have it at work but not here. You spin the front wheel in direction of rotation and tighten the nut to about , remember this is just guessing but say 30 ft pounds, back the nut off and while spinning in the direction of rotation again tighten to about 15 INCH pounds, Install the cotter key, DO NOT BACK OFF to find the closest hole. Remembe their are 2 holes for cotter pins so if one doesn't fit find the other.

So you put your torque wrench on the nut and spin the wheel till its at 30 ft. lbs? then back it off and spin it too 15 inch lbs?

That's about it, while spinning the wheel in the forward direction torque the nut to about 30, that number is off but close enough unless someone says different, back the nut off and retighten the same way, spinning in the forward direction while tightening to 15 INCH POUNDS, if no torque wrench tighten basically by hand just snugging it then install the cotter key WITHOUT BACKING ANYTHING OFF. Remember 2 kotter pin holes, one should line up.
This sets the bearings at minimum clearnace, then indicate the rotors getting the runout to less them .002 is not too hard. Make shims out of pop cans if you are despirate.

I thought the rotors were riveted on?

So if I take my tire off I will see this nut?

Leave the tire on and remove the dust cap. That thing in the middle of the hub, the very center of the wheel. Just jack the car up with the dust cover off and you will find the nut.
