Default Cross Fire Question

When I went to start my car today the engine started reving very high i shut it off before it level off but when i did it was around 3000 rpm any idea out there what it could caused by. I have noticed it dose run a high idle before but only around 1500 and thought because it was cold and never really drove it far enough to get up to operating normal temps. I have noticed after removing the air cleaner that the injectors are pumping alot of fuel i have seen then working at idle befor and it was just tick tick could this be a problem with command moddual

Not likely. It would more likely have something to do with how much air the engine is getting. That is controled by the throttle valves, the air idle control solinoids or a major vacuum leak. The computor does however give the IAC the signal to open and close. Check for operational IACs and a vacuum leak.

with the IAC's fully open it will not idle at 3000rpm, either you have one huge air leak or the throttle linkage is sticking.

Thanks for the replies i have been starting with the air cleaner off thought somthing might be binding or vacum leak no luck with finding a vacum leak the buterfly valves in the injector are fully closed it just dumping alot fuel down the troat it start fine but goes riun up to 3000 rpm. could there be some kind of sensor line that is telling it to put more fuel in the system. :smash:

One time years ago when I was struggling with heat soak on my starter, I jumped the starter across the terminals. The motor did the same thing you experienced. Could not get it to get below a very high rpm. Neve checked how high. Anyway, put it into gear - THAT was fun and drove about 2 miles home. Next time I started engine, rpm's were back down where they should be. One thing I forgot - very stupid action - pulled the fuse on the ecm while it was reving very high and stuck fuse back in. Did not fry the ecm, but that was a very uninformed and stupid act on my part. God must have been laughing at me.

No matter how much fuel is going in there, it aint going to idle higher unless its got air. You have some kind of higher air flow than normal. The first thing you can do is to locate the intake for the idle air controls, it is there on the side top of the throttle body. Stuff them full of something that will not let air pass, and then fire it up. If it idles high like that, you have a hell of a vacuum leak. They are bad for blowing the gasket on the top plenum cover.

My '82 was doing the same thing. Turned out a little rubber hose was disconnected from the right hand trottle body. Now it idles great.

In my case, the chip was bad and caused the engine to rev, but only
when the check engine light went on.
A new heat sensor, computer and chip fixed all those little glitches.

Thanks for everbodies input thats why we have this forum and why it continue to thrive. I found the problem the top of the plentum was loose witch was most likely causes it to rev around 1500 the final blow most likey came when it had backfired when i shut it down the last time. Blew an 8 inch section of gasket out from the plentum from the left side (witch also the side where i found the loose bolts) Found the section on the floor. Again thanks for the help. :hurray:

Did you have to buy complete intake gasket set?
If not where did you find just plenum gasket?

The amount of gas is not the problem. There is too much air flow.
