I don't think you can take a set of headers out of the box and expect a perfect fit....I found that you have to fiddle with the bolt holes...use the header gasket to check the holes on the flange.

Another thing to consider, emissions testing.....you may not pass if you bypass the cat.

I have a set of dynomax ceramic coated headers sitting in my garage waiting for me to start install tommorrow. I'll let you know how it goes. I have read several others who said they went on without a hitch.

Many are using the dynomax ceramic coated headers and most a very happy with them. You will probably have to do some fitting to get the Mid america system to work so might be better to just take it to a good exhaust shop and have them fab up a complete system from the headers back for ya. I have mine all rig up and once I have selected a 5 speed trans and it is installed I will move onto the exhaust system.

glad to hear that :hurray: . I also got aset of Hooker header back pipes from summit specifically for these years. that way I can bolt the whole thing on and then take and just get welded up. Don't have to ask or pay anyone to put on pipes that aren't supposed to be on anyway. I ordered Hookers Areo Chamber mufflers from summit also but have not gotten them yet.

Headman headers -- 68300 or 68301 (ceramic coat) fit my 1980 perfectly. You will have to have some custom work done to get the exhaust to match up to the headers, and if you have A/C you will have to make a spacer for the first bolt on the passenger side.

Really easy and clean install.

got Hooker Super Comps on the 74...fits great, but hangs alot lower than most headers, may hit some speed bumps or drag going up some inclines...but they are by far the most free flowing full tube headers out there.

I can vouch for that as well. You have to take speed bumps really slowly and be careful of how high they are. I think I have about 3-4" ground clearance with my headers.

Mike,

Headers went on very easy. Remove starter and spark plugs. My compressor is already gone. After that, install from bottom and boly up. Working on pipes now.

prebent pipes didn't fit. spoke to hooker and they said they had had some problems with some older pipes and were warrantying them. called summit and they said to send them back and would send another set plus pay for return shipping. gotta love those guys at summit. hate that they didn't fit though. and of course i just had to fire it up and hear the open headers.

Dynomax went in easy enough, but don't line up with the rest of the exhaust too well.

I put on a set of Holley flowtech ceramic coated full length. I love them but there was a lot of custom fitting "cads and cheater pipes" between the headers and the cross member to keep it legal. all flanged for easy change outs.

Me too...Hedman makes headers that will be accepted for smog in CA...even though they dont have an E.O. Number for my application - my engine has been smogged twice withthese headers on.

Here is a image from the drivers side.

The only thing I had to do was put a small dimple in one tube to clear the idler arm boot. Installation took an afternoon. Hook up to factory dual exhausts wasnt all that difficult using Hedman extensions.
