Default Jacked Up Timing

Ok... got a new carb, car runs great until the choke opens all the way and then it just slowly dies out. I think the iming is off cause when I start the car with the open choke and try to lightly apply gas it still dies and then backfires. I don't want to ruin my new carb. is there a way I can roughly set my timing before starting the car and letting it blow itself up? It's an `81 I can't find the labeling which tells me how much advance I need. Also which way do you turn the distrinutor to advance the timing and vice versa?

Well got the car running fine now... but the idle is a little high. I know the advance is computer controlled but I don't know what that actual base time should be set at for my year. The emissions sticker in my engine compartment is gone.

Joe, don't know if this will help but Lars has a really good paper under tech tips. You may want to look at that and see if this will help.
