I began having problems with my 74 C3 turning the starter over. I drags and simply will not turn the starter over, its as if its not getting enough power. I want to rewire all aspect from turning the ignition over and engaging the starter. I know that the + side of the battery goes to the large post on the starter. The purple wire goes to the "S" terminal and the yellow wire goes to the other small post. There is also a red wire that goes to the large "Hot" post. I know the battery is good, I just swapped out my old one for a new one thinking that might have been the problem. Once I do get it started it will run off the altenator with no problems. Any thoughts on what I need to do?
Thanks guys. I just wanted someone elses insight before I start at it myself.
What kind of starter are you running? I had problems with some cheapo starters going dead on me and once I switched to a summit hi-torq starter I have not had a problem with starting it in the last 3 years, the $150 I spent was well worth it.
Its a cheap ac delco rebuilt starter, it is the second one in about two months, I thought that might have been the problem so I bought a another one and that didnt fix it. The OEM starter use to turn it over with no problem. The motor is only about 10:1.
We need a better description of your problem. you say it drags, you talking about the solenoid or the starter? I once had a '60 Impala where the solenoid started clicking and sometimes draging. I was able to take the solenoid off and take the cap loose, by removing the two long screws that go thru the case (The only caution is that there are two internally connected wires to the under side of the cap, but you should have enough slack to do this.). Then look in under the cap at the back side of the power lug which is a large(quarter size) flat head that makes contact with another bolt head, you might see that it has been eaten away such that it only makes contact on the edges or a small potion of what was there, to fix it, back the copper lock nut on the outside to the end of the main power lug, push back on it and you can turn the power lug 90% and it is a like new solenoid.
Ok disregard the above. You posted the follow up as I was typing.
A bad battery ground wire can do this. The closer to the starter the ground wire is the better. You can eliminate this as a problem by installing a jumper cable from neg terminal of the battery to the starter. LOL
