I need to refinish an original spare tire carrier tub for a 72. Is there a correct
color for the outside of the tub- flat black, semi gloss black or something
else?
Thanks, CDC
It is natural, unfinished fiberglass. The metal strips are painted but you'll need NCRS opinion on the particular finish.
Gerry's response is correct.
The fiberglass "tub" is natural... For your 1972 Corvette, it is the dark "black" fiberglass with distinct strands running through the material, not the grey SMC tub that was used in later years. There may or may not be overspray from the muffler blackout on the edges of the tub nearest the exhaust, but this was an issue of sloppy blackout application rather than any attempt to paint the tub itself.
The metal support is painted semi-gloss black. the rivets attaching the support to the tub are natural aluminum.
Thanks for the response. If my original carrier has been spray painted- have you seen any product that can safely remove the paint without damaging
the fiberglass and get it back to the original surface?
Thanks, CDC
Castrol "Super Clean" will lift most paint without hurting the raw fiberglass (will also dry out skin rapidly! when not protected by gloves and being used in undilluted state!) You may get lucky and find original North American Rockwell emblem inlaid into the fiberglass of tire carrier (also found one in fender of my 72 LT-1 Vette-never been wrecked but, has been raced!) This is the same company that made aircraft such as P-51/F-86 Sabre to B1-B bomber (could this be why my car is so fast?)
