How do you get the power antenna out without removing the exhaust? My exhaust is all welded together now the power antenna has broke. It runs all the time. Also where is the wiring connection? Car is 1979.
Thanks
That same thing happened to my 79 on my maiden cruz home from Boston to Fort Myers FL. I didn't even expect the thing to work at all. I was waiting to get gas at the North end of the Jersey turnpike and I flipped on the radio and watched the antenna go up. I turned the radio on and off to watch the antenna (ok, so I am easily amused) and the next thing I knew, I could not turn it off.
I had planned on stopping at a hotel for some zzzz's, but I couldn't find the fuse nor the connector while I was at the rest stop. I decided to drive it straight through. What a way to get familiar with a car!
29 hours later, I arrive home (lots of stops for gas as I didn't know quite how far I could get on a tankful and didn't trust the gauge) and disconnected the battery. When I woke up I looked under the LR 1/4 panel and found the connector and unplugged it. It is still in the same conditon, the radio in the car is junk anyway and I don't listen to it. Too many higher priority repairs/mods to be done first.
This is not a simple solution, but you can get to the antenna motor by removing the back bumper cover. I had mine off for painting and I installed a power antenna through there with the exhaust still on the car. Good luck.
Same thing happened to my 78. I just cut exhaust pipe (on straight piece) to drop muffler, replaced antenna, bought a coupling and put exhaust back togather. worked fine and I'll need a new exhaust system some day anyway!
You can remove the antenna without dissasembling the car!!!
Did mine 2 years ago... major PITA though.
You have to get your fingers at it through the fender wheelwell area.
Get a good look at it from the underside first..... you also need the ability to screw a nut on a bolt with the same hand!Your mast is broken, kits are available.Good Luck!!
You can unplug the harness to your power antenna if you remove the driver's side rear speaker. The wires are green, white, and black if I remember correctly.
The muffler does not have to come out to get the antenna out. It is a minor PITA to work around the muffler, but I found it to be considerably easier than working on the outer door handle from inside the door.
Since you're welded up, can you undo an exhaust hanger and pull the muffler down any at all? Even a few more inches clearence will help out a little bit.
One little bit of advice... wear safety glasses or goggles. If you get underneath the car to work on the antenna, you will be knocking a bunch of built up dirt and trash down onto your face. It gets pretty irritating if the stuff is getting in your eyes.
Installation is more difficult without removing the muffler, but can be done. My exhaust system is the factory original 2-1-2. I cut off the clamps and still could not budge the rear muffler, so like I say, I just pulled it downard a little bit. Seemed to help out quite a bit. If you do this, be careful not to bend up your exhaust too much. It was difficult for me to get the pipes bent back to where the exhaust outlets were parallel to the ground.
