Default Wiring Question

I did a motor swap a while back and im still trying to find out what all goes to what. I have a factory assembly manual but it just isnt detailed enough. I found a blue wire today coming off the starter harness that wasn't connected. It also had a ground wire just laying there. Earlier I was playing around with it and touched it to the headers and the windshield wipers turned on! The ignition switch and car were both off when this happened. Any idea on what this could be? I also hooked up my blower motor and just heard a clicking sound coming on and then it would turn off and back on again. It was very strange. Are they any clues on where im at and what i need to do? Thanks so much.

The gound wire is just that a ground. The wipers will work untill they park and then they will stop. That is normal. This same ground if for the heater motor. so go ahead and ground it. Blue wire on the starter? I dont know what that could be. There is a purple that goes to the solinoid post, a red or pink to the ignition post and the large power wires to the large lug.

So I should definately hook up that ground. There are two wires from the ground though. I snapped some pics of what im talking about. Check it out and see if you find it somewhat familiar. Thanks again! :chevy

I dunno, would have to look at a diagram. The only thing that I can think of off hand is maybe the temp sensor for the computer. That was computer carburator equipped.

Would you happen to have a wire diagram or know where I could get my hands on one? I have the factory assembly manual but didn't see anything that was really detailed. Thanks so much for all your help.

If it is a heavy gauge blue wire, I believe it goes out to the electric cooling fan motor behind the radiator if your car came so equipped. lou

Followed this post...but sorry can't help with your 81. I can however suggest ordering a wireing diagram from the NCRS. Don't have to be a member to order. I have three different pulications for my 72, but that is the best one I've seen for concise, easy to read, clear and complete diagrams for our cars. ncrs.org is the site. You won't be sorry.
Good Luck
Eddie

Alright guys thanks for the help. Im gonna go ahead and order a wiring diagram. Oh and the blue wire is really a heavy gauge if you can tell by the pics i took and i dont think it would be even be long enough to reach the fan behind the radiator.

Definitely ground it. My 71's blower motor and wipers would work only in 1st and 2nd, when the T400 shifted into 3rd, nothing worked. Turned out the wipers and blower were grounded to the transmission and vice versa. The ground wire to the starter was disconnected. It took months to figure it out and meanwhile, every time it rained, I'd have to manually downshift to get the wipers to work. Gotta love that. Good luck.
