Does anyone have advice on what cam to install into a 71 350 .030. It has low mileage and flathead pistons, holley 650 dominator, edelbrock 7500 performer and a few other mods. The kicker is that the rear gear is 3.08 and I have the 3 speed auto. I can get a great deal on a comp 282 cam, but I am not sure what to expect from this cam with my setup. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Re: What cam to install (comp)
268 is a bit steep for the stock converter and 3.08 gears, so the 282 is WAY too much :iagree: . You will have nice top end power, but no grunt to get off the line. Try something between there and a 260. Try something with a split duration that give more duration and / or lift to the exhaust side as well. look at the cams with a 210 intake and 216 duration (at .050 lift). That would be the biggest I could see doing with a stock converter.
I'm running a 355, Elderbrock Performer ESP intake, Dart Iron Eagle 180's, and Holley 670 carb. My cam is Comp XE262 and think it is just perfect. I'm also using a B&M 2500 stall but don't need it. The big question is what kind of rear ratio am I using. Mine is a bone-stock 79. Anybody have any ideas on my ratio? If it turns out to be the same as your's, then I'd say go for the XE262 or 268.
BTW, my idle is a smooth 900RPM in park and 650 in drive. Plenty of vacuum.
