I'm thinking about installing side pipes on my '68 small block. I think I want the original Corvette style so I have covers and don't burn the ol' legs. Don't want the fiberglass covers though. Any suggestions on where to buy these to get the best price? Anybody done this themselves that can clue me in on the problems ahead of time? Thanks!

Re: Side pipes (ndirishr1)
The whole shoot-n-match will set you back about $3,000 for new reproductions. The reproduction covers & insulators alone are between $2,000-$2,400 depending on the vendor. The pipes are $500-750, then there's the mounting kits and BAM before you know it you're over $3,000!
Price is the reason a lot of peaple go with the fiberglass covers! Also here is a good price for the pipes themselves. If you call the guy up it turns out that its Allen Exhaust thats selling them. I bought a set and they look fine..just like the add reads. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33633
Thanks for the feedback. That's consistent with what I saw in Eckler's catalog. I was hoping to find someone that would beat their prices. Seems like a lot of $. I like the looks and sounds of them though. My wife might shoot me when she hears them. Hooker's are a lot less expensive but she has nice legs and I better not burn them.
I just ordered a set of factory style covers and hangers from Paragon http://www.corvette-paragon.com for my 69 convertible. It was $1,900 and actually cheaper than ordering just the covers themselves. I had to call them to make sure I was reading their website correctly.
I will be fabricating the exhaust side pipes after I recieve my covers as I don't know what size pipes that I will be able to fit under them. From reading past posts it sounds like I will need to make some kind of spacers as I want a large as possible pipe to go with the 428 cu. in. small block that I am having built.

what is a factory style cover vs. a reproduction original cover? bascially $1900 vs. $2300
I'm in the habit of telling all of my passengers when they enter or exit the vehicle to watch their legs, it's almost reflex now. I've only burned myself once, and that's when I slipped because of a pair of shoes with worn out soles.
And the stock 69 covers still do get very hot, don't kid yourself, no side exhaust is burn proof.

Sorry Steve, I can't agree with you. They do get quite warm after a long hard run, however in no way will they burn you.
They will feel quite warm to the touch, but not hot enough to make you remove a hand or leg if touched.
The body of a dark colored car sitting in the sun will get much hotter.

They are the same thing from Paragon, That is why I had to call them. The kit price is actually cheaper than just buying the reproduction covers themselves. The Paragon part number for the kit is 6598K
I do believe that Paragon is the only company that makes the reproduction side pipe covers. Others sell their product. Each side pipe consists of a large fiberglass insulator. Onto that insulator are mounted 3 separate chrome plated pieces. Then, you've got the brackets, etc. Finally, you need the exhaust pipes. Chuck
