I was looking for a used Kent-Moore tranny holding fixture to rebuild my TH400. Ebay had some for $150-200 which seems a lot for a big C clamp.
I went to Homo Depot and bought the Chinese black pipe and fittings they sell, you know the ones with threads that aren't perpendicular to the hole.
Well for about $30 and the use of my 120v mig welder I made a fixture that works the same as the KM one and mounts to an engine stand. I can rotate it 360* to get at any part of it.
I used 1" black pipe and fit the end into 1.250" pipe like an engine stand works. I did have to turn ends from steel to fit the tranny casting boss.
I have it holding the tranny now. To test it I'm going to leave it on the stand overnight with a sling as backup. If anyone is interested let me know and I'll give you the info.
As you might as surmised, I don't care for the imported products I found at the store. I don't know anyone uses them for gas or air lines? What do we make here(USA) nowadays?
I'll see if I can get a picture. I don't have a digital camers but can scan photos. I should have them back in a week.
It does work, I came back to the shop and ripped the tranny down to the point where I need a 3/8 12 pt socket to remove the rest of the main shaft. Of course I didn't have a socket here to fit it
I was able to rotate the tranny 180* to remove the valve body no problem.

got THANKS so simple it's cool  tried to email back  i
crashed, i may be able to screw it together and not need to weld....
i'm also thinking camo paint  thanks again :flag
Yeah you can build it without welding except for the braces I added in. Also look to see where the pins go into the tranny I made these on a lathe. I used tool steel and tapped the ends 7/16-14. One side is fixed the other is threaded rod to adjust it on. Stay with 7/16 or go up to 1/2 rod. Another idea I had was to use a couple of C clamps and cut and weld them in as screws. The threads are acme and hold better then the 60* V threads of the all thread. You'll have to figure a way to do that or have someone make them up for you. Those are the first pictures after I gutted the tranny I removed the case to polish it and painted the fixture with a gold paint I had in the cabinet.
