First of all, I really appreciate all of the help that I have received on this board – thanks.
Secondly I have a couple of new questions about this tranny.
1) I have to replace the detent cable, and I need to know if a universal one would work with an Edelbrock performer or if I need to get a cable specific to that carb,
2) Do I have to remove the tranny to do this, or can I do it still in the car. I looked in the Haynes vette manual, but there is nothing that detailed about this subject,
This is on an 82 vette with a 350 engine and an Edelbrock carb.
Why do you have to replace the cable?
A universal T.V. cable will work. The T.V. cable is not specific to the carburetor. You need the correct linkage on the carburetor to work properly with the T.V. cable.
The cable can be replaced while the transmission is in the car. Drop the pan and you'll quickly see how to do it.
You may need to make a small bracket to bolt the tv cable adjuster to at the carby.....the tv cable adjuster end is an odd shape & you need to ensure that there is enough room to properly adjust it and that it fits under the aircleaner base....i bolted a flat piece bent into a L shape to one of the carb mount bolts and that works fine...john :chevy
To do it RIGHT, you MUST use a correct length cable and have the right mounting system. The way it works is to raise pressure in the transmission the INSTANT that you even wiggle the throttle. If you have slack you will be taking off and not applying enough pressure to the internal clutches and you will ruin the transmission.
I had a setup that I thought was right on my car. I replaced it with the TV-Made-EZ and found out how screwed up my cable was. I had no pressure increase until about 1/8 throttle, so there was power loss. Also my cable did not allow full throttle opening, so there was more power loss.
The cable can be replaced with the trans in the car. You just need to drop the pan and follow the instructions with the kit.
I wouldn't ever run a 700/200R4 without using their cable system again.
