What are you polishing it with? I've used Mother's, Blue Magic and Wenol. All have given me a good shine but I would give a nod to the Blue Magic and Wenol over the Mother's. Make sure you use a soft cotton cloth for both the polish and to remove it. If you use anything rougher you create small scratches that will result in the milky look I think you described. Also, don't try using a normal polishing compound because it's too coarse. Go with a polish designed for aluminum.
