For those of you who have the 2004R tranny in your baby, what year did you use? I have a 1980 and am trying to avoid getting a tranny that has to be computer controlled. Any ideas?
None of the 200 4R's need to be computer controlled. The lockup can be run off one of the kit's that you can get in Jegs or Summit or most parts stores, or they can be rewired to lockup as soon as they hit 4th gear. (UKPaul will let you know more about that) Or you can purchase a tranny modified for no lockup or do the mod yourself if you are doing your own rebuild.
As Justin ( :seeya ) said. I fitted mine in my computer controlled '81 & wired up the lockup so that the computer has no control on it at all. It's easy to do & you'll only really need the lockup to work in OD, so it's just one wire going to the tranny. You'll need 2 wires if you want lockup in 3 as well, but I was told that lockup in 3 is only really needed if you're intending to tow things.
For fun I have my t/c wired to lock up on commmand and over 3000 rpm's with the gear select in 2 and 3 it feels like a stick, the car jumps just like it does in vette without that slight rev from the t/c slipping. Just a personal preference.
How are you planning on getting a tranny? Don't put a junkyard special in there....unless it's rebuilt and beefed up! Many of us have gone the Bowtie Overdrives route, but there are several other good alternatives.

I am looking at Advance Auto Parts. They have one for something like $569.
Not sure I would trust one of those behind a high torq tpi system but I have no direct knowledge of their product, prolly from a mass-rebuild shop/factory.
I'm with Fevre. When you buy one from a place like Advance, the transmission will be rebuilt to "original" specifications. None of the potential weak spots will be upgraded. And you will not have a warranty because the transmission would be installed in a vehicle that didn't originally come with the tranny. You gets what you pays for.
I think computer controlled is too strong of a statement about the 2004R tranny... more like switch controlled - but it really works. I think it is the single most effective mod you can do to a C3 vette. Some might say dropping in a big block, or going with nitrous... but being able to cruise at 80 with revs in the mid 2000 rpms is just huge.
I went with Bowtie... They were the best to deal with - and talk about lucky. They are in Hesperia which is about 70 miles away from where I live - the owner of the company had to make a run here to LA to pick up a shipment of cross members so he volunteered to DELIVER my tranny TO MY HOUSE!!!! Now that is customer service...
Not a drive goes by that I don't think about what a good decision it was to use a modern tranny in the C3. Now, why didn't Chevy think about that 30-years ago?
If you want the strongest production 2004r, get one from a 86-87 Buick Grand National. The code for the 86 is 6BR and for the 87, it's 7BRF. For a built up trans, go here: http://www.ptsxtreme.com/
They also have a link on how to strenghen a 2004r.
