sqweek sqweek,... bad u joints

simply what do they do, were are the located exactly, can they sqweek from needing some sort of lubrication? how much should it cost for their replacement and most importantly. May i just drive the car to the shop or should i have it towed? ( I sort of need the car for work related purposes this friday...that whole Pearl harbor to kaneohe thing,..my other car hates to climb the mountain)
The U-joints connect the driveshaft to the differential and the differential to the wheels via the "half shafts". They allow these parts to spin when they are not perfectly in alignment.
You should be able to drive to the shop, but if the U-joints are really the squeaking items, they are not far from falling apart. Don't go without replacing them too long, otherwise you WILL need to be towed (and also have to pay for other damaged parts). The standard U-joint parts aren't too expensive ($15-20??) each. They aren't hard to install either, but I'm not sure what labor is out where you live...
Other things that squeak - the disk calipers dragging on the rotors, wheel bearings, & mice.
Good luck -
