Default U-joint removal question....

I'm in the process of pulling my motor and tranny out of my '77. My question is can I remove only the front driveshaft u-joint or do I have to remove the rear first in order to remove the front? Also, I've never removed u-joints before, so exactly how do you get them out after you remove the bolts and straps

You can probably get away with just removing the front but if you need to push the car around latter it would be a good idea to completely remove the driveline. Once you remove the bolts and straps you can place a pry bar between the body of the u-joint and the yoke. It will come loose without too much effort. Good luck.

Hey Ryan how you been? I think it was around Halloween when we stopped up there?
To remove the driveshaft just un-do the strap bolts and the yoke will slid into the tranny enough for you to drop it out. I think that was your question? To remove the old joints you can either press them out or torch them out. I use both methods. You must have a solid plate to bolt the joint flanges to or you'll bend them and wreck them. You might find that someone already has done this. Tell tale signs are crushed 1/2 shaft tubes and nicked up yokes.
Good luck,
Gary

Can't you just pull the rear one and slip the whole tranny yoke out?

The slip collar on the front ujoint should have enough play to allow you to drop the shaft after you've got the bolts out, but if you're replacing ujoints, you have to pull them both anyway, so start at either end. I use a large socket to support the drive/half shaft which is just large enough to accommodate the ujoint cap. I then drive the ujoint out with a homemade fork resembling a pickle fork which sets on the ears of the ujoint and a BFH.
Some folks recommend a press for this procedure, but I've had good success (3 sets) with my method.

Ryan, I know this is heresy but for $100 I got mine replaced and the drive shaft balanced. The car is absolutely smooth. :jester

Thanks for the replies, I'll give some of them a try.

gtr1999-- I've been pretty good, as you can see I'm just getting around to dropping in my new motor from AR Racing. I should definately have it done in time for spring. If your up in my area sometime this summer let me know

Bobchad-- It's not that the u-joints need to be replaced, I just need to remove the tranny with the motor. So just having new ones installed wouldn't do me any good since I'd still have to take it apart again :smash:
