The battery in my 78 recently kicked the bucket. I have been very particular with my girl since I have had her for the last 4 years. She is completley origional with only 25K. I don't want to spend an arm and a leg. I am not too knowledgeable on batteries. I have heard that they can leak gas and cause corrision...I have heard that there are "tar toppers" that give the battery a more origional appearance. Is there a certain brand out there I should look at?
ALSO, this car sits much of the time...I am wondering what I could do to keep this from happening again. i.e. the battery losing its charge...
Please help...
Get yourself one of those OPTIMA batteries. They won't leak and fume up your battery compartment as they are sealed. The original vented cell covers won't fit the newer batteries and the thought of those battery fumes filling up the compartment doesn't sit well with me. There was a recent thread on this (within the last 2 weeks) you might want to try a search and see what others have said.
As batteries charge, they do emit hydrogen gas. I used to know the formula for the chemical reaction that does this, but I haven't seen it in a long time. All I know is that in the manuals that come with the golf carts we buy, they are always very ademate about no smoking while carts are on charge.
If you have the original Delco battery, you can have it restored / rebuilt, but I bet its a lot of hassle.
I have a Wal-Mart $29 battery in mine, and it has worked without hitch for 4 years now. I don't use a trickle charger, and sometimes have gone 5 weeks without starting the car.
Interstate batteries are very good, I'd say they are the best value of any battery you can get. Optimas are probably the best quality, but they are @$100 and up.
DieHards used to be awesome, but now they are basically the same battery as the Everstart, so no reason to pay more for a Sears battery anymore.
For show I use my Delco restoration battery from Restoration Battery (513-451-1038).
And for go I use a Delco 6yr battery from my local Chevy dealer. My Battery Tender (904-736-0379) keeps both fully charged without cooking them. :chevy
