Default Stock 4-speed shifter assembly slop

Face it, I'm hoping to get a Hurst setup at a reasonable price :D . However, in the mean time, I have a sloppy stock shifter that might be improvable. It was TIGHT when I bought the car, but only due to rust :mad ...I squirted some WD40 down there and suddenly it was moving much better!

I finally crawled underneath today and removed the shifter unit to see what a good cleaning and greasing might accomplish...UGLY!

I'm going to go clean 'er up, but one thing I noticed is that the shaft of the shifter, where it inserts into the cast/chromed piece that actually pivots, is loose. There is about 1mm of vertical play, and quite a bit of lateral slop. It appears as though the two pieces are not meant to be separated. Can I snug this up somehow? I figured either get some JB Weld in there (bubba  ), or else have a buddy spot weld a few points around the edge to prevent any further movement (it won't be seen beneath the upper shift boot anyway). Has anyone tried this? Any better ideas? Anyone who has a decent Hurst setup for a '68 4-speed that they don't need anymore? :D

P.S. I ordered the polished alloy Torq Thrust IIs in 16x8 yesterday
...just hope my wife doesn't see how much :D

-Roy
