I would go for the Tremec TKO or they have a new one even higher rated. Horsepower won't kill it, power shifting is what does the transmission in. I ran T5 mustang transmission behind my motor for a season, never worried about blowing first , 3rd is the weak gear and only under power shifting will it go.
When they rate a transmission at say 400Ft LBS that is a 24 hour rating under continuous loading.
I don't need a 6 speed, 5 is enough for me , the overdrive is all I really wanted out of my overdrive.

Re: Hypothetical tranny question (norvalwilhelm)
Dont want to blow stuff up. Something that looks interesting to me is the 6spd that is the full size pickups. the only problem I have with that is the 5.## first gear.
The TKO looks doable. About the right price too. As long as it wont blow up on me.
Lenco's gears are cut straight, the tranny whine will drive you nuts. Also, no provision for a speedo cable, and they weigh a ton...not a tranny for street use.
Norval is right on about the power shifts and blown parts...power shifts will break rear suspension and scatter the clutch, pressure plate, and dissintegrate the tranny...you can achieve the same, just let up on the gas when shifting...if you do that, any 4-5-6 speed will do the job for you...and your parts will live a long life...I'm using a Doug Nash 5 speed, and all is fine in Mudville.... :D
Why blow a wad of cash on an engine, but go cheap on the tranny? It's all about the system, not the individual components... In mechanics, electronics, or whatever, its always the weakest link that blows :yesnod:

How is going with the Tremec going cheap. I have a wad of cash in my blown motor and consider the Tremec as a worth addition. I never considered I was going cheap. $2749 CDN that is.
As for the overdrive, I pulled the 4.11's, went back to the 308's and still find the motor could pull less gearing. It is still 3rd before it will hook under full throttle.

The engine I estimate would cost me 15K at the highend. I cant justify 5-6K on a tranny.
So if you'd spent only 10K on an engine you'd have a few $K more to spend on the tranny. Call me weird, but I did the tranny and the steeroids first. I have yet to spend money on the engine. Sorry, but ya gotta budget for the entire system. Kinda like spending megabucks for a mega stereo amplifier but only having quarters left for the speakers... :smash:

you mess up the valve lash and now you need a new engine?

Re: Hypothetical tranny question (turtlevette)
Nah I am gonna jury rig the current engine together for a bit longer, and build a new one.

Still doesnt mean I need to buy audiophile and competition speakers now does it. If I dont NEED to blow 5-6K on a tranny why should I? Thats why I am looking into the things now before I do anything.
