Hi all,
The instrument lights in my '79 went out a few days ago. I searched the topic on this board and I found out that the gauge lights are tied to the tail lamp fuse. I checked that fuse and, sure enough, it was blown. I replaced it and the lights came back on, but then when I started the car, the fuse blew again. I replaced it again, and it immediately blew again, and it also took out the radio. Any suggestions?
Finding shorts is a case of elimination,in your case it could be a short on the printed circuit on the back of the gauge panel,or one of the several globe holders mounted on the back of the gauge cluster. You will need to remove the gauge panels to establish that,& check the wiring.
Do you have a decent circuit diagram,if not I would suggest you get one before attempting any electrical repairs.
some advice as to finding your short, hopefully it might save you some time. before you dive into the more difficult aspects, eliminate the easy to reach ones first. example, unplug the rear harness to the tail lights and see if the fuse still blows. if it doesnt, then you have narrowed the search. do this with each leg until you find the source.
also, keep an eye out for "non factory" wiring. it seems more times than not, electrical probs are caused due to "human error".
