The alternator bearing on my 80 is starting to make a grinding noise. I discovered it's not the correct unit according to the Black Book. The alternator that's in there now has no numbers at all. Where are the numbers supposed to be? Also how or where can I find a matching alternator that belongs in my year vette? The Black Book gives me 5 units to go by. Does this mean any one will be correct? Here are the #'s.....1101041, 1101075, 1101085, 1101088, 1103122. Any help would help. Thanks, Paul.
The NCRS Technical Manual for 1980-1982 lists the following alternators:
1102484, 42 Amps, Base model application
1102474, 61 Amps, C60 Application (Manual AC Control)
1103122, 63 Amps, C60 Application (Manual AC Control)
1101041, 70 Amps, Application 1st Production
1101075, 70 Amps, Application 2nd Production
Some vendors sell specific part number alternators but the ones I have seen are all for earlier Corvettes (1976 latest). It wouldn't hurt to ask (Zip, etc)
...... The car does have AC.....What is manual control? How do I know what alt. is the correct for an L-82?
All 1980s had AC standard. Looking at the Corvette Black Book, "C60" is listed as the code for optional Air Conditioning from 1963-1979. Why the NCRS pub shows the code  . As your car is an L82 it most likely would have had the more powerful alternator for the aux radiator fan. My 1980 L48 had the 63 Amp alternator.
I replaced the old alternator with a 66 amp ACDelco alternator. My car, however, is intended to be just a driver. I don't want to spend the extra $$ necessary to chase down the parts necessary to bring it to NCRS standards. I use ACD and GM replacement parts for most everything, but they are the current "functional" parts, not the "original" parts.
