Hi all,
The power windows in my '79 went out a while ago. They first got pretty sluggish, and then the drivers side failed, followed by the passenger side a few days later. I pulled the door panels off and put a test light to the wiring harness, and it showed power when I pushed the switch up. But when plugged into the motor, there is no sound at all, so I assume the motors must be dead. So how do I remove the motor? I have the shop manual, but it's unclear. Do I have to somehow secure the window/regulator (window is stuck all the way up), or can I just unbolt the motor without touching anything else? Thanks!
I know of no other way other than pulling everything out...starting with the glass. There are holes in the inner metal door skin for access to the bolts in the channel that hold the glass. Then the entire regulator + motor comes out. It's good that the window is up. Less tension on the motor spring. While it's out...replace the gears.
Lot's of work....good luck
Eddie
Oh yeah...clean up the regulator chanels and lightly grease. I also suggest buying the Assembly manual (AIM) it has detailed drawings of the regualtor/motor that are very usefull.
Have at it

It is not necessary to remove the regulator to change the motor. Hopefully the window is in the up position as it is easier to remove the motor.
Disconnect the battery.
Then remove the door panel and the access panel for the motor. The
motor should have a bracket that bolts to this access panel. There is a hole
in the door that lines up with the regulator arm. Put a bolt thru this hole
and thru the regulator to keep it from moving. (Have removed the motor
without doing this and the regulator did not move)
Unplug the wiring harness to the motor.
Use a 1/4 drive ratchet and socket, believe it is 7/16 or 1/2" to remove
the three bolts that hold the motor to the regulator. You have to reach
thru the hole in door which was uncovered when the access panel was
removed. You then have to use a large screw driver or pry bar to
bend the regulator while removing the motor.
Reverse procedure to install the new motor. Would use some lithium grease
on the gear before installing.
Before you go through the trouble of pulling the motors clean the contacts very well with sone emory cloth. When one of my motors "went out' this was the only problem. It might just be an easy fix for you.
