My thermostat hasn't been working lately, well actually since I bought the car. I don't know what is wrong. I need some help, is there a bad contact, where is the contact, wire and temperature sender, and how do I test if the gauge is bad. One thing, I dont' have a continuity tester, so just anyone with experience on dumb luck with this, please help me out!! 1980 L-82
To me a thermostat is something I put in the end of the upper rad hose to help the motor warm up quicker on cold days. It doesn't have a continuity test, any electronics of any kind.
'The sending unit in the head works with the gauge to read temperature.
:withstupid:
One suggestion, if you need to replace the thermostat ONLY use a CHEVY replacement. DO NOT buy the replacement theromstat from a parts vendor like NAPA or Autozone. I found that in this case the thermostat lasts longer if you get it from Chevy parts counter.
My first thought was to "ditch" the T-stat but then I saw where you live.
To test your current thermostat - put it in a pot of boiling water and see if the darn thing opens up......it's all mechanical so there's no contact to worry about.
As for your temp. sensor....it's either in the T-stat housing or in the water jacket of the cylinder head. Make sure your thermostat is working then post again for tips on checking your sensor / sending unit. ;)
