I recently purchased a wheel that was suppose to be a correct wheel for a 64. However, the wheel has what appears to be a factory leather wrapping around it. I'm trying to figure out if the wheel is for another year car before I tear off the wrapping and see what's inside-kinda like a blow pop. I have pictures but they are the same ones the seller provided me and they aren't that clear. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
There were three steering wheels available in 1963, including one with a leather-grain pattern in the plastic. All 1964 steering wheels were walnut grained plastic. You may have a 1963 wheel.
Thanks for the replies. It's not a midyear wheel. There are radial not circular marks on the spokes which apparently didn't show up until the C3 years which is why I thought one of the C3 guys might know what's up. My question is this: Was there a C3 wheel which resembled a midyear wheel but came with factory tight leather wrapping?? I don't believe the wrapping is "homemade". It's very tight and I can't see what's under it. :skep:
OK but two of the variations on the 1963 wheel were the radial and circular machine turning marks....
All 1968 steering wheels have a simulated wood rim made from plastic that is molded to a brushed stainless-steel, three-spoke center with a pattern of parallel lines extending from the center of the wheel to the outer rim. All 1969-1975 steering wheels are black regardless of interior colour. They have grained vinyl rims molded to a three-spoke stainless-steel hub. Each of the spokes has a brushed finish with a pattern of parallel lines extending from the center of the wheel to the outer rim. In 1976 Corvette went Vega. Quite frankly I stiil think you have a 1963 wheel. Leather-grained doesn't show up anywhere else.
