Does anybody know if Flowmaster 40 mufflers would install easily on a 79. By easily, I mean NO welding at all (don't have a welder, and can't afford to use a muffler shop). If not, can anyone suggest another good/better muffler that will connect easily? Thanks very much.
Well, I don't think they'd be any more difficult to install than any other muffler. Whether or not you'd be able to unclamp your current muffs and clamp on a couple flowmasters is entirely dependant on the condition of your exhaust system.
Mine look like this...
They will require an extra hanger each.
Just a note... 40s are LOUD. Without a crossover the resonance at about 35mph is mind numbing. It's really cool at first but can get annoying after a while.
I think you'll have to get pipes bent to fit. Flowmaster doesn't offer any type of vette installation kit that I'm aware of? I wanted some shops to bend up pipes to fit a 75 and they wouldn't do it because of no cat. If you find a prebent set of pipes let me know.
Hooker makes a set of prebent header back pipes. You can get them from summit for about 129 (i think). I used them on my 79. They were a little hard to get in but they did finally go. All bolt together, but I did take it and get it welde after I was finished :steering:
Are those the offset pipe connectors? I think stock pipes from a 74 would work in both cases from the tranny back but the offset required into the 40's would have to be fab'd ?
Thanks,
Gary
thanks for all the help guys. i guess my original question wasn't that clear, though. i want to keep the entire exhaust - manifolds, pipes, cat, etc. stock (at least for now), and just add the flowmaster 40 series mufflers. Is this possible without welding or having an entire custom exhaust fabricated? If not, does Dynomax or anybody else make bolt up mufflers?
Save your money for a good system that is custom bent. There is not a good system that fits real good out there. If you do not want a complete system have them cut the pipes and weld in the 40s. You should be able to tuck the mufflers up in the 1/4 panel so you barely see them. I have 50s which are bigger and you can't see them from the side of the car. I like the look of not having the ugly mufflers hanging down below the panel.
