Re: D44 Update Ring Gear Pattern... Look OK? (Twin_Turbo)
You made me run to the garage for a closer look! The spiders have accumulated a little surface rust but otherwise there is some hardened crap I need to clean out from the tooth valleys. A little shot of oil made them look much better. As far as the rough peaks of the spiders go, I assume this is normal wear due to the high friction of the posi plates? Please assist here in what you are seeing. I do not know what "new" spiders should look like.
Re: D44 Update Ring Gear Pattern... Look OK? (Eric R)
It looks very awkward in those pics, it's kind of hard to see but they look chopped up and burnt and it almost looks like there's been some welding done on them, hard to seet hough. Some peopledo that to lock their differentials.
As for the spider gears, they don't look very clean IMO but it's really hard to judge from pics. What looks like pits and burrs can easily be discoloration. Just check if the gears are nice and smooth and don't look mangled.
The server on which I host my pics is down but I do have pics of my differential that shows the spider gears.
Re: D44 Update Ring Gear Pattern... Look OK? (Twin_Turbo)
I understand. I am far from done with this as the clutch packs still need to be replaced along with the spider pin and carrier bearings. I have reused a new set of bearings a few times over to get the back lash correct. The pinion preload is set with just the nut right now and no (small) shims. This will be torn down and completely cleaned before the final setup. I will post another picture when I am done. These spiders have not been welded, just dirty, stained and a little surface rust. I look forward to seeing your pics to compare.

These are new gears (Dana Brand). I have heard about setting the load closer to the toe but was afraid of noise since the facory ran these in (I could see the faint contact pattern on the ring gear). I added .002 to the pinion shims due to the new and old pinion being marked +1 and -1. If you guys all agree the contact pattern is good then I will tear it back down tonight for a good cleaning, install the new carrier bearings and install it on Sunday!
