Ok got some vintage wheel questions for you "wheel" guys :
1. Slotted mags - are these strong enough for street / strip use on a vette ?
2. IF using an older rim with 3 1/2" backspacing - where can I find a 1/2" spacer ???
3. IF using spacers......do I need to upgrade my lug bolts ?
4. Should I think about going with 1/2" studs if I plan on using 10" wheels ???
You don't want a spacer, a 3-1/2" backspacing (it's measured from the inside of the rim) will place the wheel further out than stock. You need an "anti-spacer"
The spacer is just to ensure that the 'vintage' wheel would clear my trailing arms. I'm not too concerned with the wheels sticking out an inch or two. ;)
Now I'm really confused  after reading this ad :
"ANSEN SPRINT 15"x 10" wide Alloy Wheels - Brand New pair - Vintage 1972, Never used; had 1 set of Goodyear Slicks on them, and never mounted on the car. They are 4.75" bolt circle and 3.25" backspacing; and WILL fit over '65-'82 Corvette disc brake calipers without spacers. They are in Very Good to Excel. Cond. with very minor marks mostly on the inside of wheels from tire mount/ dismount. They look the same on the outer sides and the dimensions are the same, but the casting marks are different on the inside of wheels. Price special is $250.00 pr./plus S/H."
What about the trailing arms ? ....unless I'm missing something. Are the ansen wheels constructed differently than Torq Thrusts......I can't remember.
Exactly, you don't need spacers to clear the trailing arms. If anything you'd need them to clear the brake callipers, as they are out slightly from the mounting surface. With 3.5" backspacing from the inside of the rim the rim isn't going to stick inwards very far at all, therefor you would have no trouble with your T/As. You can actually go up to about 4.5" in the front and 4-3/4" in the back before you start hitting things. I don't really understand your concerns?

verskel - The Ansen Sprint mags are the classic "slotted" wheels, not like the 5-spoke American Racing TTD's, see pic:
Not sure if this will help, but...
Vintage wheels, like Torque thrusts, Ansens, etc, were designed to work with drum brakes cars. That was considered the hot setup back then.
Torque Thrust D...the D is for Disc Brakes, the back spacing allowed clearance of disk brake calipers on Mustangs and most GM cars.
Vintage Wheel Works wheels, which I run Vintage 45s, require a 3/8" spacer. I have run these for the last 2000 or so miles with no problems, and I drive my car hard and run 8.11@87.5 mph in the 1/8 mile. Seems to not be a problem.
Regardless, measure the backspacing, and it shouldn't be a problem to run a small (3/8" or so) spacer if necessary. If you want vintage style wheels in modern sizes check out Vintage Wheel Works.
