On my '80 I had to take the door panel off to get the power window switches out. They are clipped in to the door panel so to speak. There are five wires that connect to the backside of the switch via a connector that slips over five poles on the backside of the switch. Ecklers sells a new harness that has this connector for about 1$13.00 bucks if you need to replace it. Mine went screwy when I was trying to do some window alignment, the wires boke off the connector. Once you remove the door panel you will easily see how it all goes together. Good luck in finding your problem.
I'm not sure but if you mean the switches between the seats that control the power windows I don't think there would be any problems removing them. I've only been there one short time to turn one of the switches 180 degrees, it was mounted up and down :)
As I remember there where some kind of clip between the wires and the switch.
DOH! Never mind what I said. What I said applies to the door lock swithches. I haven't been down the power window road yet. My mistake and I apologize.
ah, forgot to include info...
its an 81, the windows are stuck down, fuse is popped, everytime u put a fuse in.. then turn key to ON, fuse Pops. if u guys heard of it b4.. it would be real helpfull
I don't know about the problem that is causing the fuse to blow, but if you are wanting to remove the power window switches it is fairly simple.
You can try to simply just take the console side covers (carpet in later model vettes) off and get to the switches from there. To me, it was easier to dismantle the console to get to the switches.
Once you get to where you can see the switches, you need to very carefully take a flathead screwdriver and gently pry the black plastic wiring doo-dad off of the switches. (yes, that is a technical term, honest!) I believe there are three poles on the bottom of the switch the "black plastic doo-dad" presses onto. After you get the wiring off of the switches, there are two small screws (9/32" I think) you will need to undo, and then you can remove the switches from the top side of the console bezel.
To my knowledge there is no power window relay. Someone help me out here... but at least I think there isn't one. This means the power that opens and closes the windows goes through the switches themselves. I'm betting some insulation has worn off under there causing a short... hence the blown fuse.
There is a relay, but its probably not bad. With a short to ground deal like you have its eather a bad window motor or a wire broken laying on metal ( witch there is not much of on a vette). :D
Pull the door panel and check the motor it may be locked up.
