Default is the battery toast?

has 12+ volts but only get a clicking from the starter

A fully charged battery should have around 13.5 volts. Check the voltage when you try to start it. If it drops way down the battery is probably toast or the selonoid is drawing to much power.

Check your ground connection, you should be able to crank it with 12 v.

Batteries are strange. They will show good voltage even when they are almost dead. The only way to check for sure is to go thru each cell with a hydrometer to register the specific gravity. A dead cell ='s a dead bat. This is a dying art 'cause for 80 bucks or so you can shot-gun the bat.
