Was wondering if anyone had painted their engine black during a rebuild.
Had seen pix of the GM crate motors which are painted black and thought it might offer a good contrast to the aluminum and chrome pieces in the engine bay, as opposed to the bright Chevy orange traditional engine paint for a late 60's C-3. The engine will get dirty sooner or later and I would think the grime would show up less on a motor painted black.
black looks real good if you don't paint the freeze plugs, install nice brass plugs after painting and it'll be real sharp, hard to spot leaks on a black engine though
If you paint it black in one piece it'll look like a "hecho en mexio" engine, very poorly detailed
I like silver though, white is too ghey imo and silver is nice and light to easily spot leaks and still makes it look real nice
I also like the red that they painted the new 572 crate motor & valve covers. That looks better to me than the orange. I guess it's just a matter of preference.
Our friends in Mexico did a pretty good job putting my $1300 cheapy GM eng together, it has taken all the abuse I have thrown it's way. Wish I could say the same for the $3,000 stroker short block I bought. :mad Don't care much what color my freeze plugs as long as they work. :)
OK, here comes MY OPINION.... Chevy Orange would be the norm. Black looks great with aluminum cyl. heads, intake, water pump, & accesories. A block painted to match the color of the car, I think, only looks good when the inner fender & fire wall is painted to match also. Otherwise, to me, it looks like a halfassed job.
Good point! I'm glad you mentioned that. I've seen those pictures of cars like that and it does make a difference. I don't think I'll be painting the engine compartment gold right now.
Guess I'll stick to Chevy Orange or maybe a gloss red instead.
