Default Replacing fuel screen/strainer on sending unit?!?

As I am replacing the fuel tank, I figgered I'd replace the fuel screen/strainer (mesh bag on the end of the pick-up tube). How the heck do you remove the old one? It appears it is press fit or soldered on. That sucker ain't budging. Short of cutting the tube (which would make it too short), has anyone done this?

Thanks in advance,

Here's a past thread. They call it a sock.

I have one in front of me and I can't move the sock. It doesn't seem to be soldered so it must be a press fit.

I just replaced mine and the sock needed a little twisting with a Channel Locks to work it off. To install new used a Channel Locks lightly to perswade onto tubing. '74 replacement unit is only $70 and wish I had replaced mine now. But hey, I'm cheap. :jester

I put mine loose in a vise and then tapped down on the end of the tube (not too hard) to loosen it up a bit. It gets corrosion right at the point where it sits. It will come loose with some effort. It's just a slip-on/press fit.

Thanks all. I'll give it a twist with the channel locks. No need to replace the entire unit as it still works/looks good.
