Re: My Corvette Steering power steering conversion (442olds)
You do have to collapse the rod within the steering column. I was told that I would have to pull the whole column to do this. However, the nylon retainers within that were designed to absorb an impact allowing the column to collapse no longer offered much resistance. I was able to lightly tap the rod up inside the column the 1.5"-2" needed. My car has always been garaged, never hit. Age simply takes its toll on parts.
Re: My Corvette Steering power steering conversion (Chuck Harmon)
Chuck The kids are grand kids and thanks for the compliment. .
As for the pump on my ststem I used a pump from a 8o's chevelle and not the corvette pump . I have auto crossed mine a few times and like I said earlier have had no problems.
My suggestion to all you guys interested in the system just call Tom and buy his system, he has all the details worked out.
I think he is now machining the pitman shaft on the box so you can use your factory pitman arm. SSS
Re: My Corvette Steering power steering conversion (silverslashstreak)
SSS, Chuck, others....had I known of, or this mod been available, some 2 years ++ ago I would have done this well before doing the rack install, but it's a bit late now....allthough I have all the old parts still....
I see the input ratio is 2.x something to one, I feel that is was too fast for high speed handling.....I know my car is sensitive enough at near 3 turns lock to lock...12:1 ratio....anything quicker than that would make it a bear with my wheel/tire combo....
only thing is...that having to ditch the valve on the drag link....seems making a simple bolt on end piece would be more effective...but then again...if doing that, someone needs set up to Norval's specs on that bump steer issue, so making a complete new drag link with new tie rod sleeves would help a lot....
along with the new box....much simpler install.....and of course not so lo to the ground for safety/clearance issues....not that my rack is lower than the oil pan, i'ts that 'look' that bothers me, leading with the chin so to speak....
Re: My Corvette Steering power steering conversion (Chuck Harmon)
Here's a few pictures of my setup. If I didn't have a 3" cowl hood the alternator wouldn't clear so the acc drive is not for everyone to copy. Only if you have a lot of hood clearance in that area.
Re: My Corvette Steering power steering conversion (mrvette)
Mrvette I was a little worried about it being to fast , but it works great at speed as well at normal speed. One of the questions people ask me after a auto cross run is way weren't my arms working as hard as everyone else in c2 or c3s. SSS
Re: My Corvette Steering power steering conversion (silverslashstreak)
SSS there is a nice old guy here in Jax who runs an autocross event on an old airstrip known as Whitehouse...here in Jax....Manny Montgomery....anyway he let me run my car just for fun during one of the national competition events...tell you what, with that old original steering that car was a bear to get through the course, but I notice at high speed, say 60+ on the freeways here, I need pay attention....not constantly correcting, but that the wheel is super sensitive to input from me....don't take much at ~2.8 turns L-L to get that car to change lanes, not much at all...and yes I have a decent amount of toe in on the front end....been all OVER that alignment, with infinate help from this forum so many guys I can't even count.....
IMO, anything faster than my 2.8 turns would be super for autocrossing but MY olde tyme reactions on the freeway I think it would be chancy....
